How would you describe the person sitting nearby? What words would you use & why? How might the chosen words align with those often used in the grand social narrative? Who are you? How much of who you claim to be has been set by your own ever-evolving state of awareness rather than the narrative offered by others about who they believe you to be - Are you who you say you are OR are you who you have heard that you are? How are issues of identity and self image shaped? Can a story, or social narrative, have an impact on the formation and development of identity? What is a critical age / stage for identity development? How does the media impact identity development or self-mage formation? Do you see issues of power in the act of labeling? Do issues of power / submission exist in the ability to self-name or self-define? How many levels of consciouness combine to make you the person that you are - gender, social status, religion, race, ethnicity, marital status, education, etc. Think back to a teacher from your own personal education who used "positive" or "negative" terminology to describe you or your work. Why do you still remember the words used? What is the power in labeling or naming? Are we equiping students with the power to create counternarratives? Do you consider this a requisite part of your job description?
