"Farbstudie Quadrate, c.1913" Print"Blue" Print

Blue: This piece of art represents me as a confused student of Math. As a word person, numbers, formulas, and equations have seemed threatening and confusing to me. I had a difficult time finding or making sense out of the confusing numbers and squiggles on the page. I would read the words of the problems searching for clues, almost always to no avail, which would help me to understand the main idea or the objectives. The ideas would somehow get jumbled in my mind and confusion would take over. This artwork grasps the essence of those feelings. There seems to be no control of the subject matter in this piece. The multiple shapes, angles, and lines all seem to move about the canvas in a haphazard or uncontrolled manner. Shapes are mixed in with and intersected by angles and lines. Confusing confusion! Even the figure in the bottom left-hand corner seems to be waving a white flag of surrender. The painting does offer me a glimmer of hope in the form of a shape that looks like a lighthouse. Maybe this is a sign of hope for my struggles with math concepts?

How might you use art or aesthetics to engage your students?

How might you encourage students to capture the essence of the content through the medium of the performance and visual arts?
